PCTRAN vs. Shiraz University RELAP5 Benchmark

Of

VVER1000 Steam Generator Tube Rupture

October 8, 2009

PCTRAN VVER 1000 Benchmark of the Iranian SGTR study was conducted.  The initial plant condition and sequence of events follow closely the two tables below. Transient results are plotted right after corresponding RELAP figures.  They are in reasonable agreement. The reactor scramed in 10 seconds after a initial tube rupture flow of about 850 kg/s in one SG. On assumption of loss-of-offsite power the RCP coasted down to natural circulation. HPSI was initiated to inject borated water when RCS was in equilibrium with the SG secondary side. Resumption of AFW to the intact SG's at about 1500 seconds started depressurization of the secondary side. PCTRAN run has shown depressurization in RC primary to about 5 MPa while RELAP5 has maintained around 7 MPa.

PCTRAN at about 1500 sec resumed TBV (BRU-A) that caused sudden depressurization in the SGs.

PCTRAN run AFW started at 1500 seconds; it has caused cooldown in the SG 2nd side as well as depressurization in RC primary < 7 MPa.
